Landon's first name has been picked out for over five years. I've been praying for him by name since last year before I even got pregnant. But picking out a middle name was more of a journey. Months of pregnancy went by with very little thought to what his middle name would be. There always seemed to be more pressing things that needed our attention. Plus, it felt like we had plenty of time.
Towards the end of January we sensed time was running low. We liked the idea of picking a Japanese name. We wanted to find a name that was deep in meaning and of course be easy to read for a native English speaker. We began working with our pastor and his wife to help us pull names from bible verses. It's a beautiful process where you find a verse that represents your hope for your child. Then based on the words in the verse you can pick out kanji (the traditional writing based on Chinese characters) to pick a name. We had a few we liked but nothing seemed just right.
Well time went on. Landon was born and we still did not have a middle name picked out. From this point on we knew we were on the clock as we had only 10 days to decide.
Our pastor and his wife came to visit and pray for Landon while I was at the hospital. Before Pastor Makito prayed he quoted a verse, Jeremiah 1:5.
“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
When he read that verse it reminded me of impression I had on my heart while I was pregnant.
When we found out we were having a boy I had some anxieties about raising a son. It may sound crazy to most, but as I prayed about these anxieties, I sensed the Lord saying that I should raise Landon to be a leader, and that God will give him a ministry, as he had done for Dan and I. I don't know if this means he will be a pastor or live outside of the US, but it helped me see that I should raise Landon with this outcome in mind.
After the visit, I shared with Dan about our special time of prayer and the verse pastor Makito had quoted. The next day, Dan was praying about a middle name and God revealed the name Jeremiah to him. When he suggested it, I knew yes this was it. We had been waiting and trying to come up with a name, but at just the right time it came to us.
May the words of this verse be true for our son, Landon Jeremiah Brown. May God use him in mighty ways and show off in his life!
